3 Simple Tips on How to Reduce Your Electricity Bill

Cutting down your electricity bill can help you save more money, which will subsequently enhance your budgeting. And you can do so by simply switching to energy-saving bulbs and regulating the power used by electronic devices in your home. Reducing the power used by these devices will also ensure that they will last longer. So how do you go about it?

Unplug Charged Devices

The easiest way to save energy is to unplug all electronic devices that do not require power. If your phone or laptop is fully charged, charging it further is a waste of energy. Note that turning off some devices does not mean that they do not draw power. TVs, cable boxes, and gaming console still use small amounts of power when they are off. Inspect around your house to check for devices that are unnecessarily plugged in.

Switch to Energy-Saving Light Bulbs

There is no downside when it comes to energy saving light bulbs, like Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) . Compared to equivalent incandescent bulbs, CFLs use 80% less electricity and can last up to ten times longer because of their lighting technology. A CFL glass tube is filled with gas, which glows and gives light when charged with electricity. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are another type of energy saving bulbs. They are good for replacing dimmable lights and spotlights.

A traditional bulb glass tube contains a filament that produces light when it is heated up.The short lifespan of incandescent bulbs is due to the fact that the filament evaporates gradually. And even if the bulbs draw enough power, only 5% of the power is used for lighting.

Reduce the Brightness of Your TV

According to research, you can cut down your annual electricity by £100 by reducing the contrast and brightness of your high-definition television. The research also found out that picture quality tends to improve with a reduction in brightness.

Limit Using Your HVAC System

Another important tip is to use natural light effectively, particularly when the seasons change. During winter, naturally heat your home by opening curtains during the day to allow penetration of sunlight. And instead of using more energy on air conditioners during summer, consider using blinds or light colored window shades to reflect heat.

If you are not sure what appliance contributes heavily to your electric bill, consider seeking the services of an electrical contractor who can make a better assessment.
